Receiving Player

TIP! A good tip is to practice your layups on a daily basis. In a typical game, up to four-fifths of all shots are layups.

Teach yourself to throw bounce passes correctly. It is best when the ball hits the receiving player near the waist. It’s smart to get the ball to bounce about 75% to the receiving player. It does depend on a variety of other factors, however.

Do not only practice zone defense plays. Zone play will be important, but man-to-man will pop up from time to time, too. Practice with each type of defense so you will know what to expect.

TIP! Learn how a bounce pass is thrown. If done properly, the pass will land near waist level with the opposite player.

To learn how to pass well, drill without dribbling. It is hard to play with no dribbling, but it will help your team make great passes. Even though this is not an easy drill, you will be rewarded for your efforts during game time.

Make sure your fingers are apart from one another when dribbling. That will ensure that it doesn’t get away from you as you hold it. Do not allow the palm of your hand to make contact with the ball. Fingers should be the only point of contact as you pass or shoot the ball at its target.

TIP! Free throws have a huge mental element to them. You can train your body to complete the motions of making a free throw, but if you are mentally prepared to fail, you will.

As you exercise to improve your game, it is important to work on your footwork and strength. A strong core allows you to be more balanced during games. Work the muscles in your abdomen, back, buttocks and hips. Much like boxers do, you have the ability to bolster your footwork and agility by using a jump rope.

Have a friend or family member tape your games so you can view how you appear on the court. While reviewing the tape, look for opportunities you may have missed during the game. Be honest in your assessment but not overly critical. Sometimes you think of yourself as something you are not.

TIP! Practice your passes and catches frequently. Practice catching errant throws along with perfect passes.

When doing a layup, start running using the weaker of your two feet. This will allow you to shoot with your comfortable hand. This gives you better balance, while keeping you poised toward the basket.

Altering your own pace is a good way to disrupt the opposition. Sprint towards the hoop then quickly plant your foot, then straighten up. The offense will believe that you’re stopping or slowing down and may follow in your steps. When that happens, push ahead and run past.

TIP! Don’t pump a lot of iron if you wish to become a jump shooter. Muscle flexibility is more important than muscle mass.
